The white facade of Hotel Minho Belo with its balconies and terracotta roof in Vila Nova de Cerveira

Hotel Minho Belo

The river runs quietly through the valley below, the Spanish border sits a few minutes away, and the hills of the Minho fold away in every direction from the terrace.

Hotel Minho Belo is a calm place to stay just outside Vila Nova de Cerveira, in the green north of Portugal. Our rooms are comfortable and unfussy, the welcome is genuine, and the pace here is slower than you are probably used to.

Guests arrive at all hours of the night in this part of the country, and the front desk is staffed for every one of them. Call the hotel directly if you would rather arrange your arrival with a person than a screen.

The hotel keeps a garden with outdoor furniture, a sun deck and a terrace that catches the afternoon light, along with a seasonal outdoor pool that opens in the warmer months.

Inside there is a bar, a dining room used for breakfast each morning, a lounge with a fireplace for cooler evenings and a games room with billiards and table tennis.

Parking on site is free and public, Wi-Fi reaches the whole building, an elevator serves the floors, and housekeeping runs every day of your stay without being asked.

Run by people who live here

Hotel Minho Belo has been part of daily life in Bairro de Lourido for a long time, and it still runs the way a small independent hotel should. Guests are greeted by name where possible, the front desk is staffed around the clock, and nothing about the place asks you to perform. It is a hotel built for resting properly between days spent outdoors.

Inside, the rooms are traditional and well kept, with private bathrooms, wardrobes, televisions and free Wi-Fi throughout. Several have balconies, and depending on where you are placed the outlook may open toward the river, the mountains, the garden or the town. Downstairs there is a bar, a dining room for breakfast, a lounge with a fireplace for cooler evenings, and a garden that carries most of the year.

What brings people back is usually simple: a clean, quiet room, a warm reception, and a location that puts the whole of northern Portugal within an easy drive.

Three kinds of room, all of them restful

We keep the choice deliberately simple. A Twin Room for two travelling companions, a Double Room for couples, and a Family Room with a double bed plus a sofa bed for those arriving with children.

Every room has its own bathroom, a wardrobe, a television and free Wi-Fi. Balconies are available, and views differ from one room to the next. Air conditioning is available within the property; confirm your selected room's features when booking.

Twin room with two separate beds and a wooden headboard
The Twin Room holds two separate beds, a private bathroom and a wardrobe, and suits friends or colleagues travelling together who would rather not share a bed.
Family room with a double bed and an additional single bed
The Family Room pairs a double bed with an additional sofa bed, which makes travelling with children a simple matter rather than a negotiation over space.

Unhurried, and worth waking up for

The Minho is the greenest corner of Portugal, and it shows first thing in the morning, when mist sits low over the valley and the hills come back slowly. Some rooms open onto balconies, and the outlook varies: river, mountain, garden or town. Wherever you are placed, the light in this part of the country is worth waking up for.

Outside there is a garden with outdoor furniture, a sun deck and terrace for reading through the afternoon, and a seasonal outdoor swimming pool that opens in the warmer months. Guests tend to fall into a rhythm quickly: breakfast, a drive or a walk, an afternoon back at the hotel with nothing much scheduled.

Then the rest of the day

The day starts in the dining room with a continental and buffet breakfast, taken at whatever speed suits you. It is a straightforward spread rather than a production, and it does what it should: send you out properly fed.

Afterwards the hotel keeps its own quiet momentum. The bar stays open for a drink before dinner, the shared lounge and fireplace draw people in when the evenings turn cool, and the games room, billiards table and table tennis keep younger guests happily occupied on a rainy afternoon.

In summer the garden and sun deck become the centre of things, with the seasonal outdoor pool open alongside them.

The hotel, honestly photographed

A closer look at the hotel and the country around it: reception and the lounge, the rooms and their bathrooms, the seasonal pool and garden, and the river valley of Vila Nova de Cerveira. Nothing staged, nothing borrowed from somewhere prettier.

A good base for the whole of the north

Vila Nova de Cerveira sits on the Portuguese bank of the Rio Minho, with Galicia directly across the water. From the hotel you can spend a morning wandering the town and be at the coast, in the mountains or over the border in Spain by early afternoon. Viana do Castelo, Braga and Porto are all comfortable drives.

Close by, the Aquamuseu do Rio Minho explains the river and the life it supports, while the Bienal de Cerveira has tied this small town to contemporary art for decades.

Questions guests ask us

Balconies and views, free parking, check-in and check-out times, breakfast, and how easily you can reach the town or cross the river into Galicia. The answers are gathered in one place, written plainly and without guesswork.

Where something genuinely depends on the room you are given or the season you visit in, we say so rather than promise more than the hotel can hold to.
